About Patchwork Block Puzzle

Patchwork Block Puzzle is a classic block puzzle on an 8×8 board, dressed as a quilt. Thimble the mouse hands you three fabric patches at a time, each made of one to nine squares: bars up to five long, 2×2 and 3×3 blocks, corners, L, T and zigzag shapes. Patches cannot be turned, and every fabric has its own print, so you never have to tell them apart by colour alone.

There is no clock. Each new basket is checked before you see it: its three patches can always all be placed on the quilt as it stands, in the right order. As your score grows, the big patches turn up more often.

How to play

  1. Drag a patch from the basket onto the quilt and let go where its pale copy shows. When all three are placed, Thimble brings three new ones.
  2. Fill a whole row or column and it is stitched and folded away, freeing its squares. Lines that will clear glow gold before you drop the patch.
  3. Every square you place scores 1 point. One line scores 10, two at once 30, three 60, four 100 and five 150.
  4. Clear lines with patch after patch to build a streak that multiplies line points, up to ×5. It ends after three patches in a row that clear nothing.
  5. From the third basket on, some patches carry a gold button: stitch away its line for 50 extra points. Empty the whole quilt for a Clean quilt bonus of 300.
  6. Swap trades the basket for three new patches. You start with 2 Swaps and earn one more every 10 lines, up to 3. When no patch fits, a Swap is used for you; when none is left, the game is over.

Controls

Keyboard
Drag a patch with the mouse, or click a patch and then the square where it should go. On the keyboard, 1, 2 and 3 pick a patch, the arrow keys move it, Space or Enter sews it on, and S uses a Swap.
Touch
Slide a patch from the basket onto the quilt: it floats above your finger so you can see where it lands. You can also tap a patch, then tap a square. Tap Swap for a new basket.

Tips

  • Look at all three patches before placing the first. The basket always fits, but often only in one order.
  • Keep a 3×3 space and a straight run of five squares open: those two patches end most games.
  • A streak survives two patches that clear nothing, so use them to set up a double line.
  • Save Swaps for the moment nothing fits. They are your spare lives.
